What Grama Jyothi is

Grama Jyothi is Telangana’s programme to develop villages by putting people at the centre of the work. Rather than paying individuals, it strengthens the Gram Panchayat by bringing together the efforts of different government departments and the villagers themselves. Each Gram Panchayat forms a set of people’s functional committees — around seven — that look after specific areas of village life such as sanitation, drinking water, health, education, agriculture, social security and natural resources.

How villagers take part

The committees meet regularly and bring their plans to the Grama Sabha, where the village decides which works to take up. This is how ordinary residents become active partners in development — identifying local needs, planning works and holding village institutions to account. Priority is given to poor and women-headed households, small and marginal farmers, and persons with disabilities, so that development reaches those who need it most.

Because this is a participation programme and not a cash benefit, you do not fill a form to “get” something.
