What the scheme gives you
Tamil Nadu’s free bus travel scheme for women lets every woman travel without paying a fare on ordinary government buses across the state. Launched in May 2021 (as Vidiyal Payanam Thittam, now renamed Magalir Payanam), it applies to all women and transgender persons — there is no income limit, no age or category restriction, and no distance cap. Instead of paying, the traveller is issued a zero-value ticket by the conductor.
Which buses are covered
The free travel is on ordinary (non-air-conditioned) buses run by the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) and the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC). AC, express, deluxe and long-distance premium services are not covered — those still charge a fare. Within the ordinary-bus network, though, you can travel anywhere in the state for free.

There is nothing to apply for and no pass to carry. Simply board an ordinary government bus, and when the conductor comes around, ask for a zero-value ticket. The scheme has been one of Tamil Nadu’s most-used — the share of women passengers on these buses rose sharply after it began, because it removed the daily cost of travel for work, study and errands.
