· 2 min read

What is PM Ujjwala Yojana?

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) is a central government scheme that provides free LPG (cooking gas) connections to women from economically weaker households. The goal is to replace unsafe cooking fuels like firewood and cow dung with clean LPG.

Who is eligible

To get a free LPG connection under PMUY, you must meet these criteria:

  • Gender: The applicant must be a woman
  • Age: 18 years or above
  • Economic status: The household must be below the poverty line (BPL) or belong to one of the identified categories
  • Existing connection: No one in the household should already have an LPG connection

Documents required

Keep these documents ready before visiting the distributor:

  1. Aadhaar card of the applicant
  2. BPL ration card or certificate
  3. Bank account passbook (in the applicant's name)
  4. Passport-size photograph
  5. Address proof (voter ID, electricity bill, or similar)

Step-by-step application process

Step 1: Find your nearest LPG distributor

Visit the official PMUY website or contact your nearest Indane, HP Gas, or Bharat Gas distributor. You can also call the LPG helpline at 1906.

Step 2: Collect the application form

Ask for the PMUY application form (KYC form). It is available free of cost at the distributor's office.

Step 3: Fill in the form

Fill in your personal details, bank account information, and Aadhaar number. Make sure the name matches your Aadhaar card exactly.

Step 4: Submit with documents

Attach photocopies of all required documents and submit the form at the distributor's office.

Step 5: Verification and connection

The distributor will verify your documents and eligibility. Once approved, you will receive your free LPG connection within 7 to 15 days.

Frequently asked questions

Is there any cost involved? The LPG connection itself is free. You only pay for the gas refill cylinder when you need it.

Can I apply online? Currently, PMUY applications are accepted at LPG distributor offices. Some states have started online registration through the PMUY portal.

What if I already have a connection? If anyone in your household already has an LPG connection, you are not eligible for PMUY. The scheme is meant for households without any existing connection.
